It happens when we sleep. We see a castle in the sky, go an a daring adventure, suddenly have superpowers. We envision our teeth falling out, have the ability to soar high above, and suddenly are back in a school-like setting. These are all dreams— the latter set are more commonly experienced.

Dreams have always fascinated me. It is astonishing how our mind has the power to create movie-like snippets. Sometimes dreams have such detail and accuracy that I wake up exclaiming, “No! It felt so real! Why did I wake up?!”

It’s complicated

The brain produces our thoughts, generates feelings and commands our body to move. This organ is very complex. In addition, the study of dreams, oneirology, is another way to explore how our brain works while we sleep. Research shows that there is a correlation between our dreams and our psyche.

Linked to our innermost thoughts and emotions, dreams can help us become more aware of our wants, needs and desires.

What does it mean?

Dreaming is a marvelous thing, but some dreams are rather perplexing. For example, I remember dreaming that I showed up to an important meeting without shoes. I was walking around like it was no big deal. I woke up thinking, “What was that all about?”

There is so much information out there about dreams, it’s easy to lose track and feel overwhelmed.

Hence, I’ve put together this series related to dreams and their meanings. I use the plural form of the word “meaning” because dreams are unique. Depending on the context (what is happening in your life, what you are doing and your emotional state) a dream can undergo a change.

Dream On

Become familiar with the meaning of your dreams. Understanding them can help you cultivate a richer and healthier mental-emotional state.

Teeth Falling Out

This dream has a lot to do with confidence and how you see yourself. It can also mean that there is a big change in your life that you are not ready to meet face-to-face because you feel like you lack something. Teeth are a necessity and a symbol of importance. Therefore, losing teeth in a dream can mean that somehow you feel neglected, overlooked or not prepared. In Chinese tradition, teeth falling or crumbling indicates that a relationship is fragile and needs tending to, otherwise it will fall apart.

Tips: It’s time to take charge and build up your self-esteem. Remember that you are worth it. Think about all the times you’ve achieved something. Did you cook your first soup all by yourself and it was delicious? Boom. Achievement. Remember that the little things count.

Does the relationship mean a lot to you? It could be a friend, relative or significant other, but the way to go about mending and healing a hurt relationship is to communicate before it breaks.

Flying

This dream is a positive symbol, particularly if you are flying without wings. If you find yourself in this dream, it is because something happening (or about to happen) in your life makes you elated and satisfied. This is related to relationships, travel, career or the painting you finally finished. Depending on the circumstance, flying is essentially a good symbol. Alas, if you are not achieving and doing things IRL (in real life), but you dream about flying, it is you escaping from reality.

Tips: If lately you’ve felt really good about yourself keep on doing you. Keep achieving and dreaming. Your dream of flying without wings is a wonderful dream to experience.

On the contrary, if you lack on achievements, start by setting some goals. Make sure to start small, because building good habits do not happen overnight. Whether it be making your bed every morning the moment you wake up or cleaning your space (for motivation to start cleaning, click here), small steps matter. Beginnings are everything to becoming more self-reliant and efficient.

Falling

It is the opposite of flying. As a result, this dream has much to do with you being out of control. It can be a relationship or situation. No matter where you seem to be falling from, the location is irrelevant. In all instances you have nothing to grab hold of. This indicates a lack of stability and some insecurity. It can also be an alert to take control of a situation that is in dire need of your attention before you become too reckless.

Tips: Breathe. Perhaps you are going through an uncertain time and it feels like everything is too much. Start with some deep breaths. It might sound simple, but it is solid advice.

Deep breathing relaxes the brain, hence it has a natural calming effect. When you are calm, you are also able to look at situations differently and without the anxiety or worry. Next, write down what needs to be taken care of. Then give it a few hours, or a a day. Revisit the list and come up with an attainable plan. Again, it’s all about small steps. In order to live a healthy lifestyle we need to build a strong foundation.

The take away

Decoding dreams has always interested me. Symbols have meaning and our lives are more than just what we see in real life. We are unique, wonderful, complex individuals— that’s beautiful.

The wonderful thing is that we are always able to progress. Let’s evolve our brain mentally and emotionally for the better. By doing so, we can live life better by dealing with life’s challenges, control our feelings and behaviors, bounce back from setbacks and live more happily. Now that’s a plus in my book.

Perhaps you’ve experienced one of these dreams. If you haven’t had one of the dreams mentioned, it is still information worth knowing.
