Blend your greens
There is a huge difference between blending and juicing. Juicing is a healthy alternative, but choosing to blend is a bit healthier because you keep the entire vegetable and fruit intact. Therefore, you do not lose the fiber nor do you lose any nutrients. Also, drinking your greens makes it easier to have it with you no matter what you are doing. Blending your greens is also a good idea if you simply want to break from the traditional salad bowl.
To eat your greens or not
If I had to choose between a leafy green salad or a green smoothie, I’d opt for the smoothie. I love eating my greens in smoothies. So, technically I drink my greens. I do this daily because it’s important. Your body needs a really good serving of leafy greens every single day. I also recommend green smoothies if you do not like munching on greens so much. The key to drinking your greens is to remember to not make it too sweet. Whether that sugar comes from natural fruit, honey, or cane sugar, moderation is key. And preferably, I steer away from using cane sugar in my smoothies, I prefer the sugar to come naturally from the fruit.
Recipe
The Hulk— a smoothie for two.
500 ml (16 oz.) water
1 scoop protein powder – Vanilla*
5 celery sticks
2 1/2 packed cups baby spinach
3 packed cups greens mix (baby chard, spinach & kale)
1 cup frozen peaches
1 cup frozen strawberries
1/2 cup frozen pineapple
1/2 cup frozen mango
*I use Orgain Organic Protein – Vanilla
How to make it
Start by adding the water into your blender. Next, add the scoop of protein powder. To help your blender, snap each of your celery sticks into two. One celery stick becomes two. Add all 10 celery sticks into the blender. Blend on low for 15 seconds or until liquid becomes frothy.
Next, stop the blender. Pack in the baby spinach into the blender. Blend until well integrated. Stop the blender.
Add in the three cups of greens mix. Add in all of the fruit. Blend for 30-45 seconds on high until everything is blended thoroughly.
Voila! Ready to drink.
Health note: The benefits of eating celery is very rewarding. Celery is rich in antioxidants, may reduce inflammation, and is an excellent source of fiber.
Tips
I choose to use vanilla powder for this Hulk Smoothie because this flavor tends to be a bit neutral in flavor and not overpowering like the chocolate or coffee flavors.
Opt for frozen fruit. This will make your smoothie thick, thick, thick.
If you do not have the individually frozen fruit available, a good choice is to buy the fresh fruit. You purchase the fruit, you wash it at home and cut them into pieces. Next, you put them in a container in the freezer overnight and they’ll be ready for use the next morning. Another good option is to purchase a frozen fruit medley.
**Health note: Research has shown that frozen fruit retains it’s vitamins and nutrients, sometimes even better than when eaten fresh.
